Fare partecipazione al museo. Metodi e approcci per l’accessibilità e l’intercultura

MeLa Project is one of the partner of the course Fare partecipazione al museo. Metodi e approcci per l’accessibilità e l’intercultura (Fostering participation in museums. Methods and approaches to accessibility and interculture), organised by Musei senza barriere and ABCittà in various locations in Milan, from 30 April to 8 May 2015.

Anna Chiara Cimoli (ABCittà/MeLa*Project) is one of the conceiver and curator of the project, in cooperation with Maria Chiara Ciaccheri and Paola Rampoldi. She is also directly involved as an educator, as well as other MeLa Project researchers: Rita Capurro and Davide Spallazzo.

The course Fare partecipazione al museo was conceived to promote the experimentation of innovative models, methods and practeces to participation in museums, with a specific focus on the involvement of an audience affected by disabilities and on intercultural approaches.

Hosted by museums, co-working spaces, and cultural centres in the city of Milan (Casa Testori, Avanzi, Museo del Novecento, Gallerie d’Italia, Spazio BK, Museo Diocesano, HangarBicocca), the meetings are addressed to students, museum professionals, and educators with a specific interest in studying the cultural and social role of museums, considered as some of the spaces that can better interact and dialogue with local communities.
The course, moreover, aims at providing a complete overview on new international perspectives and theories, besides the issues that are now challenging museum institutions

The course consists of five meetings, focused on specific themes:

  • fostering participation in museums. Experiences and experimentations;
  • accessibility is communication. Problem solving and possible approaches;
  • inter-culture in each one. Methods, perspectives and interpretations;
  • diversities as resources. Strategies and proposals to think over inclusion;
  • museums “side” spaces. The active role of the public.

Central topics such as the ways to favour an active participation, the facilitation of educational and exhibition activities, methods to hold people’s attention, the use of storytelling and other key strategies of the discipline allow the participants to experience firsthand several strategies to involve museum visitors.
