From June 13th to September 29th, the MEN Ethnographic Museum of Neuchâtel will host the temporary exhibition “Home Sweet Home“, promoted through the cooperation among the Institut d’Ethnologie de l’Université de Neuchâtel, the director of the Culture de la Ville and the curators of the museum. The event was conceived by the students of the Institut d’Ethnologie in the framework of the 2013 celebration of the city

The exhibition offers an exploration of the work of journalist Valérie Kernen, “Vivre ici en venant d’ailleurs”, based on the testimonies and interviews of more then 100 local immigrants she collected in the last ten years. The initiative is aimed at highlighting the cultural diversity within the foreign communities in Neuchâtel.

One of the pivotal events characterizing this period is the opening of MuCEM Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée, the national museum specifically dedicated to the cultures of the Mediterranean.

The institution, that will be inaugurated on June 4th, is the relocation of the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires, previously situated in Paris. Save the Date! A Performance and a Talk to Rethink the Museum Space with a Different Approach to Vision (National Museum Luigi Pigori, 24-25 May 2013)

On May 24th and 25th, thanks to the collaboration between MK and Routes Agency in partnership with the MeLa Project, the National Museum Luigi Pigorini in Rome will host two events: the performance Impressions d’Afrique and the discussion panel Performing the ethnographic museum, with the aim of rethink and redesigning the museum space with a different approach to vision.

“The choice of Museo Pigorini as a place of performance, is primarily concerned with the cultural ambiguity of the dances shown in Impressions d’Afrique, which do not refer to ethnographic memories but invent a brand new repertoire of aesthetic contaminations and identities, starting from the tension produced by the Western classificatory obsessions” explains Michael Stefano, MK choreographer.

In the words of Giulia Grechi, one of the curators, we can identify the meaning of this dislocation of dance in the museum’ space: “Many have insisted on the approximate death of Museum, […]

May 9th, 2013. The 63rd Celebration of “Europe Day”

On 9 May 2013 Europe will celebrate the 63rd anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. Sixty-three years ago, on 9 May 1950, the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman made the first move towards the creation of what we now know as the European Union (EU).

This year’s celebrations will be especially poignant following the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize 2012 to the EU. In its citation, the Nobel Committee said that the EU had “for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe”.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) will be joining the other European Institutions throughout the month of May to celebrate Europe Day worldwide. EU Delegations will be leading a range of different events in their host countries on the theme of Europe in the World. Lectures, competitions, film festivals and other events organised by the EU […]
