Convergence of Cultural Institutions: The Italian Experience of MAB – Musei Archivi Biblioteche

MAB- Musei Archivi Biblioteche is a newborn entity connecting the Italian Library Association (AIB), the Italian National Archival Association (ANAI) and the Italian Chapter of the International Council of Museums (ICOM-Italia). The main scope of MAB is to create a permanent coordination network to explore potentialities and perspectives of organisational and professional convergence between archives, libraries and museums.

To the knowledge of MeLa RF03 team leader Perla Innocenti (University of Glasgow), MAB is the only currently operative European initiative of active convergence of museums, libraries and archives led by professional associations. This makes MAB a truly exciting and unique case study for our research on cultural networks and final RF03 book.

The exhibition of photography and video art entitled “the sea is my land. Artists from the Mediterranean” is on display at MAXXI (the National Museum of the Arts of the 21st century) in Rome, Italy from 4th July to 29th September 2013. Perla Innocenti (University of Glasgow) visited the exhibition on 5th July and was inspired by works. The photographs (for example the ones by Syrian artist Ammar Abd Rabbo, one of the Arab world’s most important photojournalists) reminded her of the themes of similarity and identity discussed by Sreten Ugričić in the MeLa book European Crossroads, and of the MeLa research on networks to allow more flexible and heterogenic connections to be considered within the European/Mediterranean space.

The travelling exhibition “The Memory of the Sea. Objects Migrating within the Mediterranean“, inaugurated at Museo Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini in Rome on December 2012, and displayed at the Galata Museo del Mare in Genoa on February 2013, has now landed at GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, where it will be exhibited from 3 to 7 July 2013.

The initiative, curated by Anna Chiara Cimoli and promoted within the MeLa Research Field 05, is meant to present a private museum located in Zarzis, in South Tunisia, a place where many sea currents meet; this experience ensued from the work of Mohsen Lihidheb, who has been collecting, amassing, and organising objects for many years, claiming his right to take care of them, to create artworks with them, and […]
